1879-S Morgan Silver Dollar, NGC MS 64 PL, Classic Slab, Rainbow Toning
Produced from 1878-1921 at five different mints, the Morgan silver dollar is one of the most popular collector coins ever minted. Each of these large 90% silver dollars contains over 3/4 oz. of silver!
This coin is proof-like on both obverse and reverse. The obverse shows nicely reflective fields and frosted devices. Nice russet and indigo toning are present near the rim of the coin. The strike is strong, as is typical of San Francisco Morgan dollars. In the photo, there appears to be a fingerprint near Liberty’s nose; however, that must have been on the slab, as I do not see it on the coin.
The reverse is also prooflike, overlayed by the highly desirable yellow-magenta-cyan toning pattern. This toning pattern is classic from spending decades in a sulpher-rich US Treasury bag. We’ll have more toning information on our website, but suffice it to say that this toning is original, slow-deposit toning–not chemically doctored, fast-track forced toning. These colors, and this pattern, is one of the diagnostics for Treasury bag toning. (Note things like how the eagle’s wingtips are cyan, while the inside of the feathers is magenta…this pattern of slow, subtle color changes is not possible with fast-track doctoring techniques. This pattern results from the wingtips being closer to the toning source than the interior feathers, thus subjected to a higher concentration of H2S. The change from cyan to magenta is subtle, natural, and mid-feather). The lower left part of the reverse was closest to the Treasury bag, and toned first, longest, and thickest. The hydrogen sulfide (H2S) reaching the further parts of the coin was less concentrated, resulting in the magenta and eventually yellow colors.
The lighter spots on the eagle result from the planchet washing technique at the mint. It is believed that the chemical acid used to clean the planchets prior to minting wasn’t completely washed off, resulting in some areas where the hydrogen sulfide couldn’t readily react with the silver.
This coin is housed in a classic NGC “fattie” slab. This type of slab was used from approximately late 1989 to 1992-ish (brown NGC scales on label, no barcode, no plastic divider separating label from coin, and full-width classic-style hologram on the back). The hologram on this slab has partially peeled away due to dealers’ stickers.
Overall, this is a premium-for-grade, proof-like Morgan with beautiful, original rainbow toning, in a 20-year-old slab. This is a great piece!
The Slab
These early holders are prized for at least five reasons:
Tougher grading standards. Grading tended to be tougher in the mid-1980s to mid-1990s. MS 65 was a true gem, MS 66 was scarce, and MS 67 was downright tough to get! From a 12/01/1989 PCGS Population Report, out of 514,690 Morgan Dollars certified, only 774 were MS 67 or higher! That’s only 0.15%! This means many of the coins in early holders are high-end for their grade by today’s standards, or even undergraded. Even coins that were overgraded in the 1980s have become higher-end today as grading standards have eased.
Pre-”crack-out artists.” Related to #1 grading, the coins in these holders didn’t have 25 years to be cracked out and re-submitted to the grading services dozens of times looking for a higher grade. Many coin dealers make their living off of crack-outs. Today, ”crack-outs” generally stop once a coin has reached its “final resting place,” or a grade the coin achieves when everyone can tell that the coin will go no higher. This means that many coins in modern holders are mid-to-low end for their grade, since they’ve been cracked out of holders until they upgrade to a higher grade. In addition, many times coins are dipped or otherwise “helped” between crackouts, further impairing their originality.
Pre-coin doctors. Coin doctoring, with all the chemicals, compounds, lasers, etc., wasn’t the huge problem in the 1980s that it is today. Coin doctors still existed, but they didn’t have anywhere near the sophistication or technology that they have today. This means that coins in classic holders likely haven’t had high-tech tampering methods used on them. This is a better guarantee of originality. In addition, while these holders aren’t perfect, they do a good job of protecting the coin from the environment. This all adds up to a coin “frozen” in its state from the 1980s!
Scarcity. They aren’t making any more of these slabs, and each year more classic slabs are cracked-open and their coins re-submitted. While you should always BUY THE COIN itself because you like it, the slab itself can enhance the value. As long as you like the coin, it’s also okay to buy the holder!
Historical interest. The progression of technologies used in slabs tells an interesting story of the rare coin market for the last 25 years. Many folks who enjoy coins for their historical interest also enjoy older slabs for the same reason.
